How to Plan a Surprise Party

There is nothing like throwing a surprise party for that special person in your life. It is fun to see the look on their face when they walk through the door and hear everyone yell “Surprise!” It takes a lot of careful planning to throw a surprise party for a loved one.

Use the following tips to learn how to plan a surprise party that is successful and a lot of fun:

  • The Necessary Details: The first thing you should do is come up with the necessary details for the surprise party, such as the day, time and location. You want to give your guests enough time to arrive before the guest of honor. One idea is to have your guests arrive about an hour before the party is scheduled to start, just in case anyone is running late. If someone knows they are going to be too late, ask them to wait until after your loved one has arrived so they do not figure out what is going on.
  • Come Up With An Excuse: You also need to work with your friends to come up with an excuse to get your friend to the location. The excuse could be a dinner party, movie night or several friends meeting to spend the evening together. If someone is bringing your loved one to the party, ask them to work with you to come up with a good excuse to get them to the location.
  • Choose A Theme: While you are not obligated to come up with a theme, it can add fun to the party and help you narrow down the supplies. The theme should be something that reflects your loved one and their interests. This may include a specific movie or television show, sports team or even a favorite color.
  • Be Mindful of Their Personality: It is fine to invite a large group of friends if your friend is bold and outgoing. They may be surprised at first, but they will not mind having the spotlight for a few hours. If your friend is quiet and shy, you may want to stick to their family and a few close friends so you do not make them feel uncomfortable.
  • Hide The Clues: It is important to make sure any clues of the surprise party are hidden from your loved one. If you are sending out mass emails or event invites, make sure to erase them or log out of your email so they do not find out about the party. If your friend comes over your house often, make sure you hide all supplies in a good spot. You can always ask a trusted friend to hold on to the supplies until the night before or morning of the party. It may be best not to tell any children unless you are sure they can keep the party a secret.
  • Skip Decorating The Exterior: You may decorate the exterior when throwing a regular party, but this is a step you need to skip over when throwing a surprise party. Your guest of honor may feel suspicious if they see any balloons, streamers or banners outside the house. This also means keeping the blinds closed so your loved one does not see the decorations or guests. You should also ask anyone with recognizable cars to park up the street.

It takes a lot of planning to throw a surprise party for your loved one, which is why you should start planning it at least a month in advance. Your guest of honor is sure to have a blast at their surprise party.
